📰 CAG Flags Major Lapses in Maharashtra: Over 10,000 Audit Queries Ignored, ₹891 Crore Irregularities Suspected

The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) has raised serious concerns over financial governance in Maharashtra, revealing that multiple government departments have failed to respond to more than 10,000 audit queries, with potential irregularities amounting to ₹891 crore.

⚠️ Massive Backlog of Audit Queries

According to the CAG report, several departments have not adequately addressed audit observations raised over time. The failure to respond to such a large number of queries indicates gaps in accountability and financial oversight within the state administration.

📄 2,408 Inspection Reports Still Pending

The report highlighted that 2,408 Inspection Reports (IRs) remain unresolved, with departments yet to submit proper explanations or corrective measures. These reports typically contain critical observations related to financial discrepancies, procedural lapses, and compliance issues.

🏛️ Criticism Over Delayed Action Taken Notes

The CAG strongly criticised the delay in submitting Action Taken Notes (ATNs)—official responses that departments are required to file after audit findings. The delay, according to the report, reflects a lack of urgency and seriousness in addressing financial irregularities.

The audit body termed this inaction as a sign of “legislative oversight”, suggesting that the system meant to ensure accountability is not functioning effectively.

💰 ₹891 Crore in Possible Lapses

The report flagged possible financial lapses worth ₹891 crore, raising concerns about misuse, mismanagement, or inefficient utilisation of public funds. While these are not final conclusions, they point to areas requiring detailed investigation and corrective action.

🏢 Report Tabled in Assembly

The findings were presented during the recently concluded budget session of the State Assembly, bringing the issue into the legislative spotlight. The revelations are likely to trigger debates and demands for stricter monitoring mechanisms.

🌟 Call for Stronger Accountability

The CAG has emphasized the need for timely responses, better internal controls, and stricter compliance to ensure transparency in public spending.

The report serves as a wake-up call for Maharashtra’s administrative machinery to clear pending audit issues and strengthen governance systems to prevent such lapses in the future.
