Arrest Following Campus Protest

According to university sources and student representatives, the protest was organized in response to comments attributed to the Vice-Chancellor during a recent event. Demonstrators had gathered on campus, raising slogans and demanding clarification and accountability from the administration.

Police action followed the protest, leading to the detention and subsequent arrest of 14 students on charges related to unlawful assembly and disruption of public order. Authorities maintained that the arrests were made to prevent escalation and maintain campus peace.

Bail Granted with Conditions

The students were produced before a court and granted bail. However, the bail conditions stipulate that they will be released only after verification of their permanent addresses.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) criticized the condition, stating that the verification requirement would delay their release and effectively prolong the punishment despite bail being granted.

Student leaders argued that such conditions place an undue burden on students, many of whom come from different states and may face administrative delays in address verification.

SFI Announces Solidarity Protest

The Students' Federation of India (SFI) condemned the arrests and announced a protest in solidarity with the detained students. The organization has called for the withdrawal of charges and demanded that the university administration engage in dialogue rather than resorting to police action.

University Administration’s Stand

University officials have not publicly commented in detail on the Vice-Chancellor’s remarks but stated that maintaining discipline and academic functioning on campus is a priority. They also emphasized that law enforcement agencies act independently in matters related to public order.

Campus Tensions Continue

The incident has intensified tensions on campus, with various student groups taking positions either in support of the administration or backing the protesting students.

Observers note that the episode reflects broader debates over free speech, campus autonomy, and administrative authority in higher education institutions.

Further developments are expected as student organizations continue mobilization and legal proceedings move forward.
