🐦 A ‘Ballerina’ From Eurosiberia Finds a New Stage in India

A rare and graceful visitor from the vast Eurosiberian region has captured the attention of birdwatchers in southern India. The elegant Demoiselle Crane—often nicknamed the “ballerina of the bird world” for its delicate movements—was recently spotted near Chennai, marking an unusual sighting far from its usual wintering grounds.

Rare Sighting Near Chennai

On February 28, 2026, birdwatchers reported the first sighting of a Demoiselle Crane within the Chennai Metropolitan Area. The bird was observed at the Nemmeli salt pans, a coastal wetland habitat located along the outskirts of the city.

The discovery was made by bird enthusiasts Naman Bora and Amoggh Chatty, who noticed the crane quietly feeding among the reeds in the salt pan ecosystem.

After the initial observation, Bora returned to the same spot for the next three days and found the crane continuing to feed in the same area, showing remarkable persistence and attachment to the feeding grounds.

A Rare Visitor to Tamil Nadu

The Demoiselle Crane typically migrates during winter to northwestern parts of India, particularly Gujarat and Rajasthan, where large flocks are commonly seen in wetlands and open fields.

However, sightings in Tamil Nadu are extremely rare. In fact, the only other documented record of the species in the state came from Vijayanarayanam Tank in the Tirunelveli district.

This makes the Chennai sighting particularly significant for ornithologists and birdwatchers.

The Demoiselle Crane is known for its slender body, long neck, and elegant plumage, along with its distinctive dancing courtship displays that have earned it the nickname “ballerina.” The species breeds across parts of Central Asia and the Eurosiberian region, migrating thousands of kilometres each winter in search of warmer habitats and food.
