After 1,200 Street Dog Deaths in Telangana, Five Stray Dogs Allegedly Poisoned in Bhopal

Even as the Supreme Court on Thursday reserved its order in a case concerning the management of stray dogs across the country, fresh incidents of alleged animal cruelty have been reported, highlighting the growing urgency of the issue. Days after reports surfaced of over 1,200 street dogs being poisoned in Telangana within a span of one month, a similar and disturbing incident has now emerged from Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh.

Street Dog Deaths

According to animal welfare activists, five stray dogs, including a puppy, were allegedly poisoned to street dogs death in a residential area of Bhopal. The incident has triggered widespread outrage among residents and animal lovers, who have demanded strict action against those responsible.

Activists alleged that unidentified persons mixed poison in food and fed it to the stray dogs, leading to their deaths. Locals reportedly found the dogs lying motionless and alerted animal welfare groups, but the canines could not be saved.

“This is a clear case of deliberate poisoning. Such acts are not only cruel but also illegal,” an animal rights activist said, calling for swift police intervention and stronger deterrents against animal cruelty.

The Bhopal incident comes close on the heels of shocking reports from Telangana, where more than 1,200 stray dogs were allegedly poisoned across multiple districts in just one month. Those incidents had already sparked nationwide concern and calls for better enforcement of animal protection laws.

Legal experts and activists pointed out that the latest cases underline the need for clear policy direction and effective implementation of humane stray dog management measures, especially at a time when the Supreme Court is examining the issue at a national level.

Police in Bhopal said they are gathering information and may initiate an investigation based on formal complaints. Meanwhile, animal welfare groups have urged authorities to conduct post-mortem examinations, review CCTV footage from the area, and ensure accountability.

The repeated incidents have intensified the debate over animal welfare, public safety and the humane management of stray dog populations, with activists stressing that violence and poisoning cannot be a solution to the problem.
