AI-Generated Images Falsely Linking Zohran Mamdani and Mira Nair to Jeffrey Epstein Go Viral on Social Media

Multiple AI-generated images falsely claiming to show New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani as a child alongside his mother, renowned filmmaker Mira Nair, with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein have gone viral on social media, sparking widespread confusion and concern. The images were widely circulated on Monday (February 2, 2026), shortly after the US Justice Department released a large tranche of new files related to Epstein.

Falsely Linking Zohran Mamdani and Mira Nair

Fact-checks and digital forensics experts have confirmed that the images are not authentic. The photos originated from an account on X that is clearly labelled as a parody account. The images themselves carry visible watermarks identifying them as AI-generated, and several visual inconsistencies further indicate that they were digitally fabricated.

In addition to Epstein, the manipulated images also falsely depict his longtime associate Ghislaine Maxwell and other high-profile public figures. Analysts pointed out that facial proportions, lighting, clothing styles, and background details in the images do not align with the time periods they claim to represent, further undermining their credibility.

Despite these clear indicators, the images spread rapidly across platforms, with many users sharing them without verifying their origin. The timing of the posts, coinciding with renewed public interest following the release of Epstein-related court documents, contributed to their rapid circulation.

Zohran Mamdani and Mira Nair have no known personal or professional connection to Jeffrey Epstein. Observers warned that the episode highlights the growing misuse of artificial intelligence tools to create misleading and defamatory content, particularly involving public figures.

Misinformation experts have urged social media users to exercise caution, verify sources, and check for watermarks or parody labels before sharing sensational content. The incident has renewed calls for stronger safeguards and clearer labelling of AI-generated media to prevent the spread of false narratives online.

The case underscores the challenges posed by deepfakes and synthetic media in the digital age, especially during moments of heightened public scrutiny and breaking news.
