Akshay Kumar to play chief antagonist in Ajay Devgn’s Golmaal 5; here’s why it’s a major casting coup

Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar is set to join yet another blockbuster franchise, but this time with a surprising twist. The actor will reportedly play the chief antagonist in Golmaal 5, the fifth instalment of Rohit Shetty and Ajay Devgn’s hugely successful comedy franchise. The development marks Akshay’s reunion with Ajay Devgn and Rohit Shetty, not in their popular cop universe, but in an out-and-out comedy—making it one of the most exciting casting decisions in recent times.

Golmaal 5

The Golmaal franchise, which began in 2006, has been one of Hindi cinema’s most consistent box-office performers, known for its slapstick humour, ensemble cast, and Ajay Devgn’s comic timing. Akshay’s entry into this universe, especially as an antagonist, adds a fresh dynamic to the franchise, which has traditionally relied on quirky villains rather than a major star in a negative role.

This casting is being seen as a major coup for multiple reasons. Firstly, Akshay Kumar is rarely seen playing a full-fledged antagonist, particularly in a mainstream comedy. His presence is expected to elevate the humour through sharp comic confrontations with Ajay Devgn, while also adding star power to an already popular ensemble. Secondly, it reunites three big names—Akshay, Ajay, and Rohit—who have individually delivered massive hits but have never collaborated in this specific format.

Akshay’s signing of Golmaal 5 further highlights his strong association with successful franchises. In 2025 alone, he appeared in Kesari Chapter 2, Housefull 4, and Jolly LLB 3, reinforcing his reputation as Bollywood’s go-to actor for sequels. He is also part of Ahmed Khan’s Welcome to the Jungle, the third instalment of the Welcome franchise, and Priyadarshan’s much-anticipated Hera Pheri 3, which is still awaiting a confirmed shooting schedule.

Adding to his packed slate, reports suggest that Bhaagam Bhaag 2, a sequel to the 2006 hit comedy, is also in the pipeline. The film is expected to be directed by Raaj Shaandilyaa and may go on floors by mid-2026.

While Golmaal 5 is still in its early stages, Akshay Kumar’s inclusion—especially in a negative yet comic role—has already generated significant buzz. Fans are eager to see how Rohit Shetty reinvents the franchise with this unexpected casting, and how the clash of comic styles between Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn plays out on screen.
