Are the Sidhus Eyeing the BJP? Speculation Grows as Navjot Kaur Sidhu Escalates Attack on Congress

 Navjot Kaur Sidhu

Political speculation is rife in Punjab over whether former Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu and his wife, ex-MLA Navjot Kaur Sidhu, are exploring political options outside the Congress, with growing buzz about a possible tilt towards the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The conjecture intensified after Navjot Kaur Sidhu, who represented Amritsar East in the Punjab Assembly, launched a sharp public attack on the Congress leadership, particularly Rahul Gandhi. Her comments came shortly after a series of dramatic developments that culminated in her exit from the party.

Navjot Kaur was initially suspended from the Congress in December 2025 over alleged indiscipline. She later announced her resignation from the party on January 31, 2026. However, within days, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) formally expelled her, with AICC general secretary Bhupesh Baghel making the announcement on Friday, citing repeated violations of party discipline and public criticism of the leadership.

Since then, Navjot Kaur has stepped up her criticism of the Congress, accusing the party of sidelining committed leaders, stifling internal democracy, and failing to provide effective leadership in Punjab. Her pointed remarks targeting Rahul Gandhi have been widely seen as a signal that the Sidhus are preparing to chart a new political course.

While Navjot Singh Sidhu, former Punjab Congress chief and ex-cricketer-turned-politician, has not made any formal statement regarding his political future, sources say he has been holding informal discussions and weighing his options. Insiders suggest that the Sidhus may be open to aligning with another national party ahead of upcoming political developments in the state.

The BJP, which has been looking to strengthen its presence in Punjab by attracting prominent leaders from other parties, has emerged as one of the possible destinations being discussed in political circles. However, no official confirmation has come from either the Sidhus or the BJP leadership so far.

The Congress, meanwhile, has maintained that disciplinary action against Navjot Kaur Sidhu was unavoidable due to her repeated public criticism and defiance of party decisions. Party leaders have dismissed speculation about the Sidhus’ next move as premature.

As political temperatures rise in Punjab, the unfolding Sidhu saga is being closely watched, with any shift in allegiance likely to have significant implications for the state’s already volatile political landscape.
