Bengaluru Man’s ‘Rocket Stove’ Gains Attention Amid LPG Shortage

Bengaluru: A unique cooking innovation by a resident of Bengaluru is drawing widespread attention amid concerns over the availability of LPG cylinders. The device, known as a “rocket stove,” has been developed by local innovator Ashok Urs and is being seen as a practical alternative during times of fuel shortage.

According to Ashok Urs, he designed and developed the rocket stove around six years ago as a more efficient and eco-friendly option compared to traditional wood-fired stoves. The design focuses on maximizing heat efficiency while using minimal fuel.

The rocket stove operates using small pieces of wood, twigs or other biomass materials, which burn in a specially designed combustion chamber. The structure allows for improved airflow, producing a stronger and more concentrated flame while reducing smoke and fuel consumption.

Urs explained that the stove’s vertical combustion system ensures that the heat is directed upward toward the cooking vessel, making it more energy-efficient than conventional chulhas. He also noted that the design significantly cuts down on the amount of firewood required for cooking.

The innovation has recently attracted public attention as many households and small eateries explore alternatives during temporary supply concerns related to LPG. Some people have shown interest in adopting the rocket stove as a backup cooking option, particularly in rural or semi-urban areas.

Environmental enthusiasts have also praised the concept, noting that efficient biomass stoves can help reduce fuel consumption and lower harmful emissions compared to traditional open-fire cooking methods.

Ashok Urs said his aim in creating the stove was to offer an affordable and sustainable cooking solution for households that may not always have reliable access to LPG or electricity. He added that he hopes the technology can benefit communities looking for cost-effective and environmentally friendly cooking options.

With growing interest in alternative energy solutions, Urs’ rocket stove is now being discussed widely as a simple yet effective innovation that could help households manage cooking needs during fuel shortages.
