South Goa:A 20-year-old female student was found dead in her hostel room at the BITS Pilani Goa campus late on the night of February 1, marking the sixth such incident reported at the institute over the past two years, police confirmed on Monday (February 2, 2026).

The deceased has been identified as Vishnavi Jitesh, a third-year engineering student at the prestigious institution. According to police officials, her body was discovered inside her hostel room after she failed to respond to repeated calls from friends, prompting them to alert campus authorities.

Police Investigation Underway

Local police were informed immediately, and a team reached the campus to conduct a preliminary investigation. The body was sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Officials said no suicide note was recovered from the room, and further investigation is ongoing.

“A case has been registered, and all angles are being examined. The post-mortem report will provide clarity,” a senior police officer said, adding that statements from students, hostel staff, and faculty members are being recorded.

Campus and Family Informed

BITS Pilani authorities informed the student’s family and extended condolences. The institute said it is cooperating fully with the investigation and has activated internal support mechanisms for students affected by the incident.

The campus reportedly suspended regular academic activities temporarily as students gathered in shock and grief.

Growing Concerns Over Student Safety

The incident has once again raised serious concerns over student well-being and mental health support on campus, as it is the sixth student death reported at BITS Pilani Goa in the last two years, according to official records.

Student groups and parents have repeatedly called for stronger counselling systems, better monitoring, and transparent communication from the administration following previous incidents.

Authorities Seek Caution

Police have urged the public and media to avoid speculation until the investigation is complete. They also reiterated the importance of mental health awareness and timely support for students facing distress.

Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
