BJP Sweeps Mayoral Posts in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation

Chandigarh: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a major victory in the mayoral elections of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, winning key leadership positions in the civic body after a closely watched three-cornered contest.

BJP candidate Saurabh Joshi emerged victorious in the mayoral race, securing 18 votes from councillors. His nearest rival, Yogesh Dhingra from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), received 11 votes, while Gurpreet Singh Gabi of the Indian National Congress secured seven votes.

The election saw active participation from councillors belonging to the three major political parties, making it a competitive triangular contest. With Joshi’s victory, the BJP has strengthened its hold over the municipal administration in the Union Territory of Chandigarh.

Party leaders hailed the result as a reflection of the councillors’ confidence in the BJP’s leadership and governance approach in the civic body. They said the new mayor would focus on improving urban infrastructure, sanitation, and public services in the city.

Meanwhile, leaders from the Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress acknowledged the result but said they would continue to play the role of a strong opposition within the municipal corporation, raising civic issues affecting residents.

The mayoral election is considered important because the mayor heads the municipal corporation and oversees the functioning of civic departments responsible for city planning, waste management, road maintenance, and public welfare projects.

With the BJP sweeping the key mayoral post, the party is expected to play a decisive role in shaping the civic administration and development agenda of Chandigarh in the coming year.
