‘Blow to Justice,’ Say Kin After 17 Acquitted in Chhattisgarh Father-Son Murder Case

Raipur/Bemetara (Chhattisgarh): Family members of Raheem Ummad Mohammad (55) and his son Idul Mohammad (35) expressed deep anguish after a local court acquitted 17 accused in the 2023 father-son murder case linked to communal violence in Bemetara district.

Blow to Justice

Raheem and Idul were found dead during violent clashes that had erupted in a village in Bemetara district in April 2023. The violence reportedly broke out following tensions between two communities, escalating into arson, stone-pelting, and assaults. Several houses were damaged during the unrest, and prohibitory orders were imposed to control the situation.

Court Verdict

After nearly three years of legal proceedings, the trial court acquitted all 17 accused, citing lack of conclusive evidence and inconsistencies in witness testimonies. According to the prosecution, the accused had been charged with murder, rioting, and other related offences under relevant sections of the law.

However, the court reportedly observed that the prosecution failed to establish the charges beyond reasonable doubt. Key witnesses either turned hostile or could not firmly identify the accused during the trial, weakening the case.

Family’s Reaction

Reacting strongly to the verdict, members of the victims’ family described the acquittal as a “blow to justice.” They alleged that they had been under pressure since the beginning of the case and claimed that crucial evidence was not properly presented.

“We have lost two members of our family. Now the court has let everyone go. Where do we go for justice?” a relative said, adding that the family is considering filing an appeal in a higher court.

ackground of the Violence

The 2023 violence in Bemetara had triggered political and administrative concern across Chhattisgarh. Internet services were temporarily suspended in the district, and additional security forces were deployed to maintain law and order. Several individuals were arrested during the investigation phase.

The incident had drawn attention from political leaders and civil society groups, who had called for peace and a thorough probe.

Next Steps

State authorities said they would examine the court order in detail before deciding on further legal action. Legal experts indicate that the prosecution has the option to challenge the acquittal in the High Court.

As the legal battle potentially moves to the next stage, the grieving family continues to seek closure, maintaining that justice remains elusive in the wake of the verdict.
