Chandigarh Achieves 99.93% Literacy, Declared ‘Fully Literate Union Territory’

Chandigarh: Chandigarh has achieved a remarkable milestone in the field of education by recording a literacy rate of 99.93%, earning the recognition of a “fully literate Union Territory.” The achievement marks a significant step in the region’s efforts to promote education and eliminate illiteracy.

Fully Literate Union Territory

Officials said the accomplishment comes after sustained efforts by the local administration, educational institutions and community organisations to ensure that every eligible resident has access to basic education. Special literacy campaigns were conducted across the Union Territory to identify and educate individuals who had missed formal schooling.

The administration launched several targeted initiatives under national literacy programmes to help adults and out-of-school individuals learn reading, writing and basic arithmetic. Volunteers, teachers and social workers played a crucial role in reaching out to people in various localities and encouraging them to participate in literacy classes.

Authorities said the focus was not only on enrolling learners but also on ensuring that they completed the programme and acquired functional literacy skills. Awareness drives, door-to-door surveys and community learning centres were set up to bring remaining non-literate individuals into the education system.

Officials noted that achieving a literacy rate of nearly 100% reflects the strong educational infrastructure in Chandigarh and the community’s positive attitude towards learning. The administration also credited digital learning tools and modern teaching methods for helping learners grasp basic skills more effectively.

With this achievement, Chandigarh joins the list of regions that have successfully eliminated large-scale illiteracy. The Union Territory administration has now set its sights on further improving the quality of education, digital literacy and skill development to ensure that residents are equipped for future opportunities.

Education experts say the milestone highlights how sustained government initiatives and community participation can transform literacy levels and empower citizens through education.
