Colva Villagers Protest Outside Police Station, Seek Action Against PI and Builder Over Alleged Harassment

Colva (Goa): Tension prevailed in Colva on Monday as a large group of villagers, joined by local political leaders, staged a protest outside the Colva Police Station demanding action against the Police Inspector (PI) and a construction project promoter. The protesters alleged harassment, intimidation, and manhandling of local residents in connection with an ongoing development project in the village.

According to villagers, the dispute stems from opposition to a construction project that some residents claim is affecting the local community and environment. Protesters alleged that when villagers raised concerns, they were allegedly harassed and threatened by the project promoter, with the alleged support or inaction of the police.

Several villagers claimed that during a recent confrontation, some residents were manhandled and intimidated. They accused the Police Inspector of siding with the builder instead of ensuring impartial enforcement of the law. The allegations triggered widespread anger in the coastal village, prompting residents to gather in large numbers at the police station.

Raising slogans and demanding accountability, the protesters called for an inquiry into the conduct of the Police Inspector and strict action against the builder. They also sought assurances that no villager would face further harassment for voicing concerns over the project.

Local political leaders who joined the protest expressed support for the villagers, stating that development should not come at the cost of community rights and dignity. They urged higher authorities to intervene and ensure transparency in both policing and construction approvals.

The protest led to tense moments outside the police station, with heavy police presence deployed to maintain order. Senior officials reportedly met representatives of the villagers and assured them that the allegations would be examined thoroughly.

Police sources stated that the matter is under review and that appropriate action would be taken if any misconduct is found. Meanwhile, the construction promoter has not publicly responded to the allegations.

The incident has once again highlighted growing friction in parts of Goa between local communities and real estate development projects, with residents increasingly demanding greater consultation and accountability in matters affecting their neighborhoods.
