Communal Clash, Arson in Chhattisgarh’s Gariaband; Three Arrested, Situation Under Control

Gariaband (Chhattisgarh): A violent clash between two communities over an old dispute spiralled into large-scale unrest in Chhattisgarh’s Gariaband district on Sunday, leaving multiple homes and vehicles gutted in arson. Police have arrested three people in connection with the incident, and authorities say the situation is now under control.

According to officials, tensions had been simmering between members of the two groups for some time over a longstanding local dispute. On Sunday, an argument reportedly escalated into stone-pelting and physical altercations, quickly drawing larger crowds from both sides.

The confrontation turned violent when members of one group allegedly attacked houses belonging to the other community. At least 10 houses were set on fire, and three to four vehicles were torched, causing significant property damage. Thick plumes of smoke were seen rising from the affected area as panic spread among residents.

Police and district administration teams rushed to the spot after receiving information about the violence. Additional forces were deployed to disperse the mob and prevent further escalation. Fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the flames and prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby structures.

A senior police official said that three accused have been arrested so far, and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend others involved in the arson and vandalism. “The situation is presently under control. Adequate police deployment has been ensured, and patrolling is being carried out to maintain peace,” the officer stated.

Authorities have also imposed preventive measures in the sensitive areas of the district to avoid any fresh flare-ups. Senior administrative officials visited the affected locality to assess the damage and assure residents of strict action against those responsible.

No casualties have been officially reported so far, though some individuals sustained minor injuries during the clash, police said.

The district administration has appealed to the public to maintain calm and refrain from spreading rumours on social media, which could further inflame tensions. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact trigger and sequence of events that led to the violence.
