Days Ahead of Polls, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal Get New Governors

In a significant political development just days before upcoming elections, the central government has appointed new Governors for Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. The decision has triggered strong reactions from political leaders, especially in West Bengal.

According to official sources, R. N. Ravi has been appointed as the new Governor of West Bengal following the resignation of C. V. Ananda Bose. The sudden change comes at a politically sensitive time as preparations for elections are underway.

Reacting to the development, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said she was informed about the appointment by Union Home Minister Amit Shah over a phone call. Banerjee said she was “shocked” to learn about Ananda Bose’s resignation and the immediate appointment of a new Governor.

Speaking to reporters, Banerjee said that although the Governor’s appointment is the prerogative of the central government, the timing of the decision just ahead of elections raised questions. She added that such changes during an important political period should ideally involve broader consultation.

Meanwhile, a new Governor has also been appointed for Tamil Nadu, though officials said the transition is part of routine administrative decisions taken by the Centre.

The Governor plays a crucial constitutional role in the functioning of state governments, acting as the representative of the President of India and overseeing key administrative and legislative processes.

Political observers say the appointments could influence the political atmosphere in the states, especially in West Bengal where relations between the state government and the Governor’s office have often been tense.

Further details regarding the swearing-in ceremonies and official transition are expected to be announced soon.
