📰 Distress Migration from Punjab: Economic Slowdown and Job Mismatch Driving Youth Abroad, Say Experts

Rising concerns over large-scale migration from Punjab have once again come into focus, with experts attributing the trend to economic stagnation and a growing mismatch between education and employment opportunities in the State.

According to findings highlighted in the Punjab Economic Survey 2025–26, both “push” and “pull” factors are contributing to what is increasingly being described as “distress migration” or brain drain. While limited job prospects and slow industrial growth are pushing youth to look beyond the State, better career opportunities, higher wages, and improved quality of life abroad are acting as strong pull factors.

Economists point out that despite relatively high literacy rates and a large number of graduates, many young people in Punjab are unable to find jobs that match their qualifications. This mismatch has led to frustration and a growing inclination to seek employment overseas, particularly in countries like Canada, Australia, and the UK.

The report also notes that traditional sectors such as agriculture, which once sustained the State’s economy, are no longer able to absorb the expanding workforce. Industrial growth has not kept pace with the aspirations of the youth, further aggravating the situation.

Experts warn that this ongoing outflow of skilled and semi-skilled workers could have long-term implications for Punjab’s economy, including labour shortages in certain sectors and a decline in local innovation and entrepreneurship.

At the same time, the migration trend has created a parallel ecosystem of coaching centres and visa consultancies, reflecting the scale at which young people are preparing to move abroad.

Policy analysts have called for urgent reforms, including investment in industry, promotion of skill-based education, and alignment of academic curricula with market needs. Strengthening local employment opportunities and encouraging startups are also seen as key steps to curb the outflow.

The State government is expected to take note of these concerns as it plans future economic strategies. Addressing the root causes of distress migration, experts say, will be crucial to retaining talent and ensuring sustainable development in Punjab.
