DoctorSpeak: Understanding Male Menopause and Its Effects

Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Just as women experience menopause, men too undergo age-related hormonal changes, commonly referred to as male menopause or andropause. This condition involves a gradual decline in testosterone levels, which can significantly affect both physical and emotional health.

 Male Menopause

Aditya, a 48-year-old IT professional, recently experienced several symptoms associated with andropause. Over the past few months, he noticed extreme fatigue, decreased energy levels, persistent stress, a drop in libido, and erectile dysfunction. Despite maintaining a healthy diet, he also experienced weight gain, particularly around the abdomen.

Following his doctor’s advice, Aditya underwent clinical investigations, which revealed that his testosterone levels had dropped to 280 ng/dl — below the normal range of 300–1000 ng/dl. He was subsequently diagnosed with andropause, also known medically as late-onset hypogonadism.

Experts explain that this hormonal decline is a natural part of aging in men, typically occurring in the late 40s and 50s. Low testosterone levels can lead to a range of physical changes, including reduced muscle mass, increased fat accumulation, and fatigue. Emotionally, men may experience irritability, depression, and reduced motivation.

Doctors also note that chronic stress plays a key role in accelerating the onset of andropause. Elevated cortisol levels caused by prolonged stress can contribute to central obesity and further reduce testosterone production.

Treatment for andropause is individualized, often involving lifestyle modifications such as regular exercise, balanced nutrition, stress management, and, in some cases, testosterone replacement therapy under medical supervision. Early recognition and intervention can improve quality of life and mitigate the physical and emotional effects of male menopause.

Healthcare professionals emphasize that men experiencing symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, low libido, or mood changes should consult a qualified doctor for proper assessment and management.
