Jamshedpur: A suspected case of vehicle cloning has come to light in the Mango area of Jamshedpur after two Maruti Suzuki Dzire cars — one blue and one white — were found using the same registration number, JH05CM 0742.
The shocking discovery has raised concerns among residents and prompted police to launch an investigation into possible number plate duplication and misuse.

Discovery Raises Alarm
The matter surfaced when local residents noticed that two different vehicles of the same model but different colours were bearing identical registration numbers. The anomaly was reported to the authorities after one of the vehicles was spotted in a separate location despite the original owner confirming his car was elsewhere at the same time.
Upon preliminary verification, it was confirmed that both cars were indeed displaying the same number plate — JH05CM 0742 — registered under the JH05 RTO code, which corresponds to the Jamshedpur region in Jharkhand.
Police Launch Probe
Police officials have initiated a detailed probe to determine whether the case involves deliberate vehicle cloning, forged number plates, or tampering with official registration details.
Vehicle cloning is a criminal practice in which fraudsters copy the registration number of a legally registered vehicle and place it on another vehicle of the same make or model to avoid detection during illegal activities such as theft, traffic violations, or other crimes.
Authorities are verifying chassis numbers, engine numbers, and registration documents of both cars to identify the original vehicle and establish whether one of them is operating with fake or duplicated plates.
Possible Criminal Angle
Officials suspect that one of the cars may have been using the duplicate number to evade traffic fines, toll charges, or law enforcement tracking systems. Investigators are also examining CCTV footage from nearby areas to trace the movement of both vehicles.
The owners of the vehicles are being questioned to determine whether the duplication occurred without the knowledge of the legitimate owner.
Public Advisory
Police have urged vehicle owners to regularly check online portals for any unexpected traffic challans or violations linked to their registration numbers, as these can sometimes indicate cloning.
Residents have expressed concern over the incident, highlighting the need for stricter monitoring and verification of vehicle registration plates.
Further action will be taken once the forensic and document verification process is completed. Authorities have assured that strict measures will follow if foul play is confirmed.
The incident has once again underscored the growing challenge of vehicle cloning in urban areas and the importance of vigilance by both authorities and citizens.
