Ex-Parliamentarian and Eminent Educationist Dr. Janardan Waghmare Passes Away at 91

Dr. Janardan Madhavrao Waghmare, a distinguished academician, author, social reformer and former Member of Parliament, died on the morning of 2 March 2026 at the age of 91 in Latur, Maharashtra, India. His passing marks the end of a remarkable life dedicated to education, literature, public service and nation-building.

Dr. Waghmare, born on 11 November 1934 in Janwal village, Chakur taluka, Latur district, pursued extensive higher education, earning degrees from Osmania University, Pune University and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, including a Ph.D. and LL.M. He also received a D.Litt. honoris causa from Punjabi University, Patiala.


A towering figure in the field of education, Dr. Waghmare spent over three decades shaping young minds as a lecturer, principal and visionary leader. He began his academic career teaching English at colleges in Maharashtra and later served as Principal of Rajarshi Shahu College, Latur (1970–1994). Subsequently, he was appointed the founding Vice-Chancellor of Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University, Nanded (1994–1999), where he laid strong foundations for higher education in the region.


Dr. Waghmare earned widespread recognition as the architect of the renowned “Latur Pattern” — an educational model that significantly improved competitive exam performance among students from the Marathwada region and inspired teaching reforms across Maharashtra. His academic scholarship and thought leadership in pedagogy and literature enriched Maharashtra’s intellectual landscape.


In public life, Dr. Waghmare represented Maharashtra in the Rajya Sabha as a member of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) from 2008 to 2014, where he also served as the party’s chief whip. During his tenure in the upper house of Parliament, he was a member of key committees on agriculture and human resources development, reflecting his continuing commitment to education and social welfare.


Beyond his roles in academia and politics, Dr. Waghmare was a prolific writer and social commentator, contributing extensively to literature and public discourse on education and policy. In recognition of his lifelong contributions, he was honoured with the prestigious Shahu Award in 2022 for his outstanding work in the field of education.


He is survived by his wife, one son and two daughters, who mourn the loss of a mentor, scholar and public servant whose legacy will continue to influence generations of learners and leaders.
