FIR Against 8 for Allegedly Using Casteist Slurs Against Dalit Deputy Sarpanch in Gujarat

An FIR has been registered against eight individuals for allegedly using casteist slurs against a Dalit deputy sarpanch of a village in Sabarkantha district, following a dispute over the removal of a dilapidated bird feeder tower.

Casteist Slurs

Dispute Over Panchayat Decision

According to police officials, the controversy began after the gram panchayat decided to dismantle an old and unsafe bird feeder structure in the village. The structure, reportedly in a dangerous condition, had been identified for removal as part of safety and development measures.

The decision, however, led to objections from some villagers, escalating into a heated argument during which the deputy sarpanch was allegedly subjected to caste-based abuse.

Allegations of Casteist Remarks

The deputy sarpanch filed a complaint stating that during the confrontation, a group of individuals used derogatory and casteist slurs against him in public view. The complainant also alleged that he was threatened and humiliated while performing his official duties.

Based on the complaint, police registered a case against eight accused persons under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Police Action

Authorities confirmed that an investigation is underway and statements of witnesses are being recorded. Officials stated that appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings.

Police also said that security has been tightened in the village to prevent further escalation and maintain law and order.

Community Tensions

The incident has sparked concern among local residents and social groups, with calls for strict action against those involved. Community leaders have appealed for calm and urged villagers to resolve differences through dialogue rather than confrontation.

The case highlights ongoing challenges related to caste-based discrimination and the importance of ensuring dignity and safety for elected representatives from marginalised communities. Further developments are awaited as the investigation progresses.
