📰 Former Kathmandu CDO Arrested Over Role in Crackdown on Nepal’s Gen Z Protests

In a major development in Nepal, authorities have arrested a former Chief District Officer (CDO) of Kathmandu for his alleged role in the controversial crackdown on the recent “Gen Z protests” that had gripped the capital.

The arrest follows swift action by the newly-formed government led by Balendra Shah, which, in its very first Cabinet meeting, approved the implementation of findings submitted by a high-level probe commission. The commission had been tasked with investigating the use of force by authorities during the protests, which were largely driven by young citizens demanding accountability, transparency, and governance reforms.

According to officials, the probe report found serious lapses in the handling of the demonstrations, including allegations of excessive use of force, unlawful detentions, and violation of civil rights. The former CDO, who was responsible for maintaining law and order in the district at the time, has been accused of authorising or failing to prevent harsh measures against protesters.

The Gen Z protests, which saw widespread participation from students and young professionals, had drawn international attention due to reports of police action against demonstrators. Several videos and eyewitness accounts had surfaced, alleging mistreatment and suppression of peaceful protests.

Following the Cabinet’s decision, law enforcement agencies moved quickly to act on the commission’s recommendations, signalling the government’s intent to ensure accountability. Officials have indicated that more arrests or disciplinary actions could follow as the investigation progresses.

The move has been welcomed by activists and civil society groups, who see it as a step toward justice and institutional accountability. However, some political observers caution that the legal process must remain transparent and fair to avoid perceptions of political targeting.

The case marks a significant moment in Nepal’s evolving political landscape, highlighting the growing influence of youth-led movements and the increasing demand for responsible governance.
