Sarfaraz made the announcement through a statement issued by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). In the statement, the veteran wicketkeeper-batter expressed gratitude to teammates, coaches, fans and the cricket board for supporting him throughout his journey in international cricket.

The 37-year-old cricketer last represented Pakistan in a Test match against Australia national cricket team at Perth in December 2023. Although he had not featured regularly in the national side in recent years, Sarfaraz remained a respected figure in Pakistan cricket for his leadership and contributions on the field.

Sarfaraz Ahmed made his international debut in 2007 and went on to play across all three formats—Tests, One Day Internationals (ODIs) and T20 Internationals. Over the years, he became known for his sharp wicketkeeping skills, aggressive batting and energetic leadership style.

His most memorable achievement came in 2017 when he captained Pakistan to victory in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, defeating arch-rivals India national cricket team in the final. The victory remains one of the biggest highlights in Pakistan’s recent cricket history.

During his career, Sarfaraz also played a key role in Pakistan’s Test and limited-overs teams, contributing important runs in crucial matches and guiding younger players. His leadership helped stabilize the team during a period of transition.

In his retirement message, Sarfaraz thanked fans for their unwavering support and said representing Pakistan on the international stage had been the greatest honour of his life. He added that he would continue to stay connected with cricket in different capacities in the future.

Following the announcement, tributes poured in from former players, fans and cricket experts, who praised Sarfaraz Ahmed for his dedication, fighting spirit and significant contributions to Pakistan cricket over nearly two decades.
