Former UGC Chief Jagadesh Kumar Appointed Chairman of Board of Governors at IIM Calcutta

Kolkata: Former chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), M. Jagadesh Kumar, has been appointed as the Chairman of the Board of Governors of Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIM Calcutta). The appointment has been approved by **Droupadi Murmu, the President of India.

According to official sources, Jagadesh Kumar will hold the position for a four-year term. The Board of Governors is the top decision-making body of the institute and plays a crucial role in shaping its academic policies, strategic planning, and administrative decisions.


Jagadesh Kumar previously served as the Chairman of the University

Grants Commission, the regulatory body responsible for coordinating and maintaining standards of higher education in India. During his tenure at the UGC, he was associated with several reforms related to higher education policies, digital learning initiatives, and academic collaborations.


Before heading the UGC, Kumar also served as the Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), where he played a significant role in academic administration and research development.


Officials at IIM Calcutta welcomed the appointment, stating that Kumar’s extensive experience in higher education governance and policy-making will help strengthen the institute’s academic and institutional growth.


Founded in 1961, IIM Calcutta, located in Kolkata, is one of India’s premier management institutions and is known globally for its programmes in management education, research, and leadership development.


With this new appointment, Kumar is expected to contribute to the institute’s efforts to expand international collaborations, enhance research output, and maintain its reputation as a leading business school in India and globally.
