In an innovative push to increase voter participation, the Election Commission of India has launched a series of creative outreach initiatives in Assam, blending traditional art forms with modern digital engagement.

The campaign comes in response to a noticeable dip in voter turnout during the 2021 elections, which marked a break in the steady rise in participation seen in the state since 2001. Concerned by this decline, election authorities have stepped up efforts to reconnect with voters and reignite civic enthusiasm.

As part of the drive, activities such as rangoli competitions, street plays, cultural programmes, and awareness rallies are being organized across districts to spread the message about the importance of voting. These traditional methods are being complemented by contemporary approaches like vlogging, social media campaigns, and influencer collaborations aimed at engaging younger voters.

Officials said the focus is on making voter awareness more relatable and interactive. Youth volunteers and content creators are being encouraged to produce short videos and digital content highlighting the significance of voting, the ease of registration, and the power of individual participation in democracy.

Special outreach programmes are also targeting first-time voters, women, and rural communities, ensuring that information reaches even remote areas. Mobile awareness vans, campus drives, and door-to-door campaigns are being used to maximize coverage.

Election officials emphasized that increasing voter turnout is crucial for a healthy democracy and that innovative strategies are necessary to address changing communication trends and voter behavior.

With a mix of tradition and technology, the Election Commission hopes to reverse the decline and achieve higher voter participation in the upcoming elections, reinforcing the democratic spirit across Assam.
