Gaurav Gogoi Just Face of Assam Congress, Rakibul Hussain Its ‘Sole Base’: Bhupen Borah

Political tensions intensified in Assam after state Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah said that MP Gaurav Gogoi is merely the “face” of the Assam Congress, while senior leader Rakibul Hussain remains its “sole base.”

Borah’s remarks have triggered fresh debate within political circles about leadership dynamics and internal alignments within the Assam unit of the Congress.

Leadership Equation in Assam Congress

Speaking to reporters, Borah clarified that Gogoi represents the public face of the party in the state, but credited Rakibul Hussain for building and sustaining the party’s grassroots structure over the years.

He described Hussain as a leader with deep organisational roots and strong support across constituencies, suggesting that the party’s strength lies in collective leadership rather than a single individual.

The statement is being viewed by observers as an attempt to balance internal factions amid ongoing political churn in the state.

CM’s Claim of Borah Joining BJP

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stirred controversy by announcing that Borah would be joining the BJP on February 22 after meeting him at his residence.

The Chief Minister’s claim created a political buzz, with speculation mounting over possible defections or shifts in alignment.

However, Congress sources dismissed the assertion, maintaining that Borah continues to lead the party in Assam and that no such decision has been made.

Political Reactions

The exchange has added to the already heightened political atmosphere in Assam. The BJP has frequently targeted the Congress over leadership questions, while the opposition accuses the ruling party of attempting to destabilise its ranks through public statements and political messaging.

Analysts believe the episode reflects the evolving political landscape in the state, where leadership equations and party loyalties are under close scrutiny ahead of upcoming electoral contests.

As February 22 approaches, all eyes will be on developments within Assam’s political corridors to see whether the Chief Minister’s statement translates into any concrete shift or remains part of the ongoing war of words between rival parties.
