Goa seeks to grow as a wellness and medical tourism hub in India

In a major push to diversify its tourism economy beyond beaches and nightlife, the Goa government has unveiled plans to position the coastal state as a leading destination for wellness and medical tourism. The initiative aims to attract both domestic and international visitors seeking holistic healing, preventive healthcare, and advanced medical treatment.

All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA)

Officials said the strategy focuses on leveraging Goa’s serene natural environment, established hospitality infrastructure, and growing network of multi-specialty hospitals to create a comprehensive health-tourism ecosystem. The move is also seen as a way to ensure year-round tourist inflow, reducing seasonal fluctuations in revenue.

AIIA seeks additional land for expansion

A key development in this direction is a proposal by the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), a premier institution under the Ministry of AYUSH, to expand its presence in the state. The institute has requested an additional 50 acres of land to establish a large-scale wellness and preventive medicine centre.

The proposed facility is expected to offer integrated healthcare services combining Ayurveda, yoga, naturopathy, and other traditional systems of medicine along with modern diagnostic support. It will also include research facilities, training centres, and residential wellness programmes designed for long-term therapeutic stays.

State officials confirmed that discussions are underway to identify suitable land parcels and fast-track approvals. If cleared, the project could significantly boost Goa’s profile as a destination for holistic and alternative healthcare.

Focus on preventive and holistic care

Authorities believe that global interest in preventive healthcare and natural therapies has grown significantly in recent years. By strengthening institutions like AIIA and encouraging private investment in wellness resorts, Goa aims to tap into this rising demand.

The state is also exploring partnerships between hospitals, wellness centres, and hospitality providers to offer integrated medical tourism packages. These would include elective procedures, post-operative recovery stays, and wellness retreats tailored for international patients.

Economic impact and employment

Officials said the wellness and medical tourism sector could generate substantial employment opportunities for healthcare professionals, therapists, hospitality workers, and support staff. It would also encourage skill development in traditional medicine systems and allied services.

With improved connectivity, international airport facilities, and a globally recognised brand name, Goa is positioning itself as a premium yet accessible healthcare destination.

The government is expected to roll out a detailed roadmap in the coming months, outlining incentives for investors, regulatory support, and infrastructure upgrades aimed at transforming the state into a hub for wellness and preventive medicine in India.
