Govt Files FIRs Against Poll Officers; Bengal Says It Has Complied With EC Directive, Mamata Backs Bureaucrats

Kolkata/New Delhi: The West Bengal government has registered FIRs against certain poll officers following directions from the Election Commission of India (EC), even as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee publicly defended the state’s bureaucrats amid the growing controversy.

According to an official communiqué issued by the poll panel, the West Bengal Chief Secretary has sent a formal letter of compliance in response to the EC’s instructions issued earlier this week.

Poll Officers

“The Bengal chief secretary has sent a letter of compliance in response to EC's directions on Tuesday. The Commission, which is on a visit to Assam, shall examine the same on its return from Assam,” the communiqué stated.

📌 Background of the Issue

The development comes after the Election Commission reportedly directed the state government to initiate action against certain officials in connection with alleged irregularities or lapses related to electoral duties. Acting on the directive, the state government registered FIRs as instructed.

However, the specifics of the allegations against the officers have not been publicly detailed, and further scrutiny is expected once the Commission reviews the compliance report.

🏛 Mamata Banerjee’s Stand

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee voiced strong support for the state’s administrative officers, stating that they were performing their duties in accordance with established procedures. She indicated that bureaucrats should not be unfairly targeted for decisions taken in the course of official responsibilities.

Her remarks signal possible friction between the state government and the poll panel, although the formal compliance suggests procedural adherence to the Commission’s directive.

🔎 EC to Review Compliance

The Election Commission, currently on an official visit to Assam, is expected to examine the state government’s response upon its return. The poll panel may decide on further action based on its assessment of the compliance report.

⚖ Political and Administrative Implications

The episode highlights ongoing tensions between constitutional bodies and state administrations during election-related matters. With elections often bringing heightened scrutiny, such developments could have broader implications for administrative accountability and Centre-state relations.

Further clarity is likely once the Election Commission completes its review and communicates its next course of action.
