Govt to Spend ₹1,000 Crore to Upgrade Hamirpur Medical College into Multi-Speciality Hub: CM

The Himachal Pradesh government will invest ₹1,000 crore to transform the Dr Radhakrishnan Government Medical College and Hospital (RKGMCH) into a state-of-the-art multi-speciality institution, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced on Friday.

The announcement came after the Chief Minister inspected the ongoing construction and expansion works at the medical college in Hamirpur district.

Hamirpur Medical College

Vision to Build the State’s Best Medical College

Addressing officials and media during his visit, Sukhu said the government is committed to upgrading RKGMCH into the best medical college in Himachal Pradesh.

“Our government will spend ₹1,000 crore to make the medical college a multi-speciality hospital and the best medical college in the state,” he stated.

The Chief Minister reviewed progress on new buildings, hospital infrastructure, and additional facilities being constructed as part of the expansion plan.

Major Infrastructure Expansion

Under the proposed upgrade, the medical college will witness:

  • Expansion of hospital bed capacity

  • Establishment of advanced speciality and super-speciality departments

  • Modern diagnostic and critical care units

  • Upgraded operation theatres and emergency services

  • Improved hostel and residential facilities for students and staff

Officials said the expansion aims to reduce patient load on tertiary hospitals in other districts and ensure better access to advanced healthcare in the Hamirpur region.

Boost to Healthcare and Medical Education

The Chief Minister emphasized that strengthening medical infrastructure in district-level institutions is a key priority of the state government. The upgraded facility is expected to enhance both healthcare delivery and medical education standards.

The investment will also create employment opportunities for doctors, nursing staff, paramedical workers, and administrative personnel.

Monitoring of Construction Works

During the inspection, Sukhu directed officials to ensure timely completion of ongoing projects without compromising on quality. He stressed that public healthcare infrastructure must meet high standards, especially in hilly states like Himachal Pradesh, where access to advanced treatment can be challenging in remote areas.

He also instructed departments to remove bottlenecks and expedite procurement processes wherever necessary.

Long-Term Impact

Once completed, the upgraded RKGMCH is expected to serve not only Hamirpur but also neighbouring districts, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for specialised treatment.

The move reflects the state government’s broader push to modernise public healthcare institutions and improve service delivery across Himachal Pradesh.
