Gujarat, Centre Sign MoU to Boost Rural Water Supply Under Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0

In a significant step towards strengthening rural infrastructure, the Government of Gujarat has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of India under the ambitious Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0. The agreement aims to ensure uninterrupted and sustainable drinking water supply to rural households across the state.

Key Highlights of the Agreement

Under this MoU, both the Centre and the state government have committed to upgrading and expanding water supply systems in villages. The primary focus will be on providing continuous tap water supply, moving beyond the earlier model of limited-hour distribution.

The initiative will involve the development of advanced infrastructure, including water treatment plants, strengthened pipeline networks, and smart monitoring systems to maintain quality and efficiency.

Focus on Sustainability and Quality

Officials emphasized that the project will not only ensure availability but also prioritize water quality and long-term sustainability. Measures such as groundwater recharge, rainwater harvesting, and the use of technology-driven monitoring systems will be implemented to safeguard water resources.

Benefits for Rural Households

The MoU is expected to directly benefit millions of rural residents, particularly women, who often bear the burden of fetching water from distant sources. With piped water supply at home, families will gain improved health, hygiene, and quality of life.

Centre-State Collaboration

The partnership reflects a strong cooperative federal approach, with financial and technical assistance from the Centre complementing state-level execution. Authorities stated that the agreement aligns with the broader national goal of achieving “Har Ghar Jal”—providing tap water connections to every rural household.

Looking Ahead

With this agreement in place, Gujarat is expected to accelerate its rural water supply coverage and set a model for other states under Jal Jeevan Mission. The implementation phase will begin soon, with timelines and targets to be closely monitored by both governments.
