Gujarat Voter Count at 4.40 Crore in Final Electoral Rolls Published by Election Commission of India After SIR

Gandhinagar: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has published the final electoral rolls for Gujarat following the completion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), placing the total number of registered voters in the State at 4.40 crore.

The updated figure reflects changes made after claims, objections, and verification exercises conducted during the revision process.

Final Electoral Rolls

Comparison with Draft Rolls

Earlier, the draft electoral rolls released by the ECI on December 19 had pegged the total number of electors at 4.34 crore, a significant drop from the previously recorded 5.08 crore voters.

Officials said the reduction in numbers during the draft stage was due to the removal of:

  • Duplicate entries

  • Deceased voters

  • Shifted or untraceable electors

  • Incorrect or incomplete registrations

Following the verification process and disposal of claims and objections, the final count increased slightly from the draft figure to 4.40 crore.

What is Special Intensive Revision (SIR)?

The Special Intensive Revision is a comprehensive exercise undertaken by the Election Commission to update electoral rolls. It involves:

  • Door-to-door verification by Booth Level Officers (BLOs)

  • Public display of draft rolls

  • Acceptance of fresh applications for inclusion

  • Correction of errors in existing entries

  • Deletion of ineligible names

The ECI stated that the aim of the SIR is to ensure accuracy, transparency, and credibility of voter lists ahead of upcoming elections.

Political and Administrative Significance

The revision exercise assumes importance as Gujarat prepares for future electoral processes. Accurate voter rolls are crucial for free and fair elections, and the ECI emphasized that continuous efforts are made to maintain updated records.

Officials clarified that the changes reflect routine electoral roll maintenance and are part of the Commission’s statutory responsibilities under the Representation of the People Act.

Next Steps

The final electoral rolls are now available for public inspection at designated offices and on the official ECI portal. Citizens who still identify discrepancies can apply for corrections or inclusion through prescribed procedures.

The Election Commission reiterated its commitment to conducting transparent elections with updated and error-free electoral rolls across the State.
