Gukesh Dommaraju Says Cheating Issue “Made Bigger Than It Actually Is,” Distances Himself from Vladimir Kramnik

“Problem Exists, But Not as Big as Portrayed”

Speaking about the controversy, Gukesh acknowledged that cheating in online chess is a concern, especially with the availability of powerful engines and digital tools. However, he emphasized that the problem should not be exaggerated to the point where it creates unnecessary suspicion within the chess community.

According to him, most professional players compete with integrity, and anti-cheating measures on major platforms have significantly improved in recent years.

Distancing from Kramnik’s Allegations

Gukesh also made it clear that he does not support former World Champion Vladimir Kramnik’s approach of publicly levelling cheating allegations against several players based on statistical analysis and performance patterns in online games.

Kramnik has been vocal in raising concerns about what he considers “unusual” performances in online tournaments, sparking heated debates across the chess world. While some have backed his call for stricter scrutiny, others have criticized the public nature of his accusations.

Gukesh said he prefers institutional mechanisms and proper investigative processes rather than public allegations without conclusive proof.

Focus on Fair Play and Positivity

The Indian Grandmaster stressed the importance of maintaining trust within the chess community. He noted that constant suspicion can harm the sport’s image and create a toxic atmosphere, particularly for young and emerging players.

Gukesh added that tournament organizers and online platforms already employ advanced anti-cheating detection systems, and any concerns should be handled through official channels rather than social media discourse.

Growing Debate in Chess World

The issue of cheating in chess, especially online formats, has become a global talking point in recent years. As digital competitions gained popularity, concerns over fair play have intensified. However, voices like Gukesh’s suggest that while vigilance is necessary, balanced discussion is equally important.
