Gukesh Stunned by Van Foreest at Prague Masters; Aravindh Holds Maghsoodloo to a Draw

India’s teenage Grandmaster D. Gukesh suffered a surprising defeat at the prestigious Prague Chess Masters, going down to Dutch star Jorden van Foreest in a tense round-robin clash. The result has shaken up the standings as the tournament heads into its decisive second half.

Gukesh Caught Off Guard

Gukesh, one of the pre-tournament favorites, struggled to find his usual rhythm against Van Foreest. Playing with the white pieces, the Indian prodigy appeared to have a stable position out of the opening. However, Van Foreest gradually seized the initiative in the middlegame with precise calculation and active piece play.

A critical tactical sequence in the late middlegame tilted the balance firmly in the Dutch Grandmaster’s favor. Despite Gukesh’s attempts to complicate matters in the endgame, Van Foreest converted his advantage with clinical accuracy, sealing a much-needed victory.

The defeat marks one of the biggest upsets of the tournament so far and dents Gukesh’s hopes of climbing quickly up the leaderboard.

Aravindh Shares the Spoils

Meanwhile, fellow Indian Grandmaster Aravindh Chithambaram settled for a hard-fought draw against Iran’s Parham Maghsoodloo.

The encounter saw balanced play from both sides, with neither player able to secure a decisive advantage. Aravindh defended accurately in a complex middlegame before simplifying into an equal endgame, where both players agreed to split the point.

Tight Standings with Six Rounds to Go

With six rounds still remaining in the 10-player, nine-round tournament, the competition remains wide open. Gukesh currently shares seventh place alongside top seed Vincent Keymer, American Grandmaster Hans Moke Niemann, and Maghsoodloo.

The tightly packed standings mean that a single win or loss could significantly alter the leaderboard in the coming rounds.

Road Ahead

As the tournament progresses into its crucial phase, Gukesh will be eager to bounce back strongly and re-enter title contention. Aravindh, on the other hand, remains within striking distance and could emerge as a dark horse if he strings together a series of wins.

With several heavyweight clashes lined up in the remaining rounds, fans can expect high drama and intense battles at the board in Prague.
