Himachal Assembly Passes RDG Resolution Amid Uproar; CM Sukhu Accuses BJP of Double Standards

Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly on Tuesday passed a Resolution on Regularisation of Daily Wagers (RDG) amid noisy scenes and sharp exchanges between the treasury benches and the Opposition.

The resolution was adopted despite strong protests from members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who questioned the government’s financial preparedness and implementation strategy. The session witnessed repeated sloganeering and disruptions as Opposition legislators demanded clarity on funding and timelines.

CM Sukhu’s Attack on BJP

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu accused the BJP of “double standards,” alleging that the party was opposing in the House what it had supported in principle earlier. He defended the resolution, stating that the move was aimed at providing relief and job security to thousands of daily wage workers who have served the state for years.

Sukhu said the government remains committed to fulfilling its promises and ensuring social justice for contractual and daily wage employees. He asserted that financial challenges should not come in the way of workers’ rights.

Offer to Meet PM with LoP

In a bid to build consensus and secure financial assistance, the Chief Minister offered to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with the Leader of the Opposition (LoP). Sukhu said he was willing to jointly press for enhanced Central support to help the state manage its fiscal responsibilities.

“We are ready to approach the Centre together in the larger interest of Himachal Pradesh,” Sukhu reportedly said during the debate, calling for cooperative federalism.

Heated Debate in the House

The BJP legislators, however, accused the government of attempting to gain political mileage and alleged that the state’s financial condition was deteriorating. They sought a detailed roadmap explaining how the resolution would be funded without increasing the debt burden.

Despite the uproar, the Speaker proceeded with the business of the House and the RDG resolution was passed by voice vote.

What the RDG Resolution Means

The resolution is expected to pave the way for regularisation measures and policy decisions benefiting daily wage workers in the state. Officials indicated that detailed guidelines and implementation procedures would be announced after administrative review.

The Assembly session concluded amid continuing exchanges between ruling and Opposition members, reflecting the political intensity surrounding employment and fiscal management issues in the hill state.
