Himachal Pradesh Braces for Cold Wave as Rain

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts as temperatures have plummeted sharply, creating cold wave-like conditions in popular tourist areas such as Manali and Mandi.

Senior IMD Scientist Sandeep Kumar Sharma reported that Kothi in Kullu district recorded the heaviest snowfall of 15 cm, while Kangra and Mandi witnessed the highest rainfall in the state. The rainfall in parts of Mandi and Kangra was accompanied by thunderstorms, adding to travel disruptions and safety concerns.

According to Sharma, temperatures have dropped by up to seven degrees Celsius, with early mornings experiencing intense cold. He warned residents and tourists to take precautions, particularly in high-altitude regions.

Looking ahead, higher-altitude areas such as Kullu and Spiti may continue to see light snowfall and occasional rain until February 8, driven by a temporary western disturbance expected on February 6. Meanwhile, neighboring Telangana is seeing rising temperatures, easing previous cold spells, although morning fog continues to reduce visibility, affecting road travel.

Authorities have advised the public to stay updated on weather alerts, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy snowfall or rainfall, and exercise caution in flood- or landslide-prone zones.
