Himachal Pradesh Reels Under Heavy Snowfall; 565 Roads Closed, Power Supply Hit

Heavy snowfall across Himachal Pradesh has severely disrupted normal life, forcing the closure of 565 roads and affecting power supply in several districts, officials said on Friday.

Power Supply Hit

Lahaul and Spiti Worst Affected

According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), the tribal district of Lahaul and Spiti has emerged as the worst-hit region, with 292 roads blocked due to thick accumulation of snow.

Among the key routes affected are National Highway-03 (Leh–Manali) and National Highway-505 (Kaza–Gramphu), both of which are crucial for connectivity in the high-altitude areas. The closure of these highways has disrupted the movement of essential supplies and stranded vehicles in certain stretches.

Widespread Disruptions

Apart from road blockages, the heavy snowfall has also impacted electricity infrastructure. Several power transformers and transmission lines have reportedly been damaged or rendered non-functional, leading to outages in remote and semi-urban areas.

Restoration teams have been deployed, but officials said operations are being hampered by continuous snowfall and extreme weather conditions.

Schools and Transport Affected

Authorities in multiple districts have ordered the closure of schools as a precautionary measure. Public transport services have been curtailed on snowbound routes, and residents have been advised to avoid non-essential travel.

Tourist movement has also been affected, particularly in popular hill destinations, where authorities are closely monitoring road and weather conditions.

Rescue and Restoration Efforts

Snow-clearing machines have been pressed into service to reopen critical roads on priority, especially those leading to hospitals and essential service centres. Emergency response teams are on standby to assist stranded commuters and vulnerable residents.

The Meteorological Department has forecast continued cold conditions, though snowfall intensity is expected to reduce in the coming days.

Officials have urged residents to remain indoors, stock essential supplies, and follow advisories issued by the district administration as restoration efforts continue across the State.
