Images of Zohran Mamdani and Mira Nair With Jeffrey Epstein Are AI-Generated, Not Authentic

Images circulating on social media that appear to show New York State Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani and his mother, acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair, alongside convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have been confirmed as AI-generated and not authentic.

Jeffrey Epstein

The images began spreading shortly after the U.S. Justice Department released a large tranche of new documents related to the Epstein case. They were initially posted from an account on X (formerly Twitter) that is clearly labelled as a parody account. Despite this, the images were shared widely without context, leading to confusion and misinformation online.

Fact-checkers and digital analysts noted several clear indicators that the images were artificially generated. The visuals contain AI watermarks, inconsistencies in lighting and facial details, and other visual anomalies commonly associated with generative AI tools. Experts also pointed out that there is no credible evidence linking either Mamdani or Nair to Epstein.

Zohran Mamdani, a progressive Democratic lawmaker representing parts of Queens, New York, and Mira Nair, an internationally known director of films such as Monsoon Wedding and The Namesake, have not been named in any official Epstein-related investigations or court records.

The timing of the posts—coinciding with renewed public attention on Epstein following the document release—appears to have contributed to the rapid spread of the fabricated images. Observers say such incidents highlight how AI-generated content can be used to create misleading narratives, particularly around high-profile figures.

Social media platforms have increasingly faced scrutiny over the circulation of manipulated content. The presence of visible AI watermarks and the parody label on the originating account suggest that the images were not intended as genuine photographs, but their subsequent sharing without disclaimers blurred that distinction.

The episode underscores the importance of verifying the source and authenticity of viral content, especially in the age of advanced AI image-generation technology.
