‘Imran Khan Deserves to Be Treated With Dignity’: Former Cricket Captains Issue Joint Statement

A group of former international cricket captains from across the world has issued a joint statement calling for former Pakistan Prime Minister and World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan to be treated with “dignity and basic human consideration” amid his ongoing legal and political troubles.

The statement, signed by several prominent figures of world cricket, emphasized that while legal processes must take their course, Khan’s stature as a former national leader and sporting icon warrants humane treatment and respect for his rights.

Among those who signed the appeal were Indian greats Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, former Australia captain Greg Chappell and World Cup-winning skipper Steve Waugh, West Indies legend Clive Lloyd, England’s former captain Michael Atherton, and Australian women’s cricket pioneer Belinda Clark.

In the statement, the signatories highlighted Khan’s contribution to international cricket, particularly leading Pakistan to victory in the 1992 Cricket World Cup, and his long-standing philanthropic efforts, including the establishment of a cancer hospital in Lahore. They noted that regardless of political differences, his legacy in sport and public life should not be overlooked.

The former captains stressed that the appeal was not a political endorsement but a humanitarian one. “We respect the sovereignty of Pakistan’s legal system,” the statement reportedly said, “but we urge that Imran Khan be afforded due process, transparency, and humane conditions consistent with international norms.”

Khan, who has been facing multiple legal cases since his removal from office, remains a polarising figure in Pakistan’s political landscape. His supporters allege that the cases against him are politically motivated, while the government maintains that the proceedings are lawful and based on evidence.

The joint appeal from cricketing stalwarts has sparked debate across the sporting and political spectrum. Supporters see it as a powerful show of solidarity from the global cricket fraternity, while critics argue that former players should avoid commenting on political matters.

Nonetheless, the intervention underscores Khan’s enduring influence in the cricketing world, decades after he last stepped onto the field as a player.
