Include Women-Run Hotels, Homestays on Tourism Dept Portal: Stakeholders Urge HP Govt

Tourism stakeholders in Himachal Pradesh have urged the state government to include women-run hotels and homestays on the official tourism department portal to promote gender-inclusive growth and boost rural livelihoods.

Representatives from hotel associations, homestay operators, and women’s self-help groups submitted their recommendations to the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation and the state government, calling for a dedicated section highlighting accommodations managed by women entrepreneurs.

Demand for Dedicated Listing

Stakeholders said that although many women in rural and semi-urban areas have successfully established homestays and small hotels, they often struggle with digital visibility and marketing. They argued that featuring these establishments prominently on the official tourism portal would increase bookings, improve financial independence, and encourage more women to enter the tourism sector.

They suggested:

  • A separate category for women-run properties.

  • Verified badges to ensure authenticity.

  • Promotional campaigns focusing on women-led hospitality.

  • Integration with online booking systems for direct reservations.

Boost to Rural Economy

Industry representatives noted that Himachal’s tourism economy heavily relies on small-scale operators, particularly in remote districts. Many women-run homestays are located in villages offering eco-tourism, cultural tourism, and farm-based experiences.

By including these units on the portal, the government can strengthen grassroots tourism while also aligning with broader women empowerment initiatives.

Alignment with State’s Vision

The proposal has been made at a time when the state government, led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, is focusing on sustainable tourism and rural development.

Stakeholders emphasized that promoting women entrepreneurs in hospitality would support inclusive economic growth and align with the government’s push for self-employment opportunities in hill regions.

Challenges Faced by Women Entrepreneurs

Women operators pointed out key challenges such as limited digital literacy, lack of marketing resources, and difficulty navigating government registration processes. They have requested simplified procedures and training workshops to help them list their properties on the portal.

Some have also suggested financial incentives, low-interest loans, and capacity-building programmes to enhance service quality and competitiveness.

Government Response Expected

Officials from the tourism department have reportedly taken note of the proposal and are expected to review the feasibility of adding a women-focused category on the portal. Sources indicate that the idea is being examined as part of a broader plan to modernize and expand the department’s online presence.

If implemented, the move could significantly enhance visibility for women-led enterprises and further position Himachal Pradesh as a state promoting inclusive and community-driven tourism.
