India Secures Landmark Asian Olympic Shooting Sports Qualifier, Delhi to Host 2027 Championship

New Delhi:India is set to mark a major milestone in its sporting journey as it prepares to host the Asian Rifle and Pistol Championship in 2027, an event that will serve as an official Olympic qualifying tournament for the 2028 Los Angeles Games. The prestigious continental competition will be held in New Delhi, further cementing the country’s growing stature as a global hub for shooting sports.

Olympic Shooting Sports

The championship will offer eight direct Olympic quota places, making it one of the most crucial events on the Asian shooting calendar. These quota slots will be in addition to the 12 Olympic berths that will be available through the ISSF World Cup (Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun) scheduled to be hosted in Delhi from April 21 to 30 next year.

Historic First for Indian Shooting

This will be the first time India hosts an Asian-level Olympic qualifying shooting championship, a significant achievement for the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) and the country’s sports administration. With both the Asian Championship and the World Cup acting as Olympic qualifiers, India will uniquely host two separate qualification pathways for Los Angeles 2028.

Officials said the decision reflects international confidence in India’s world-class shooting infrastructure, organisational capabilities, and proven track record of successfully hosting major ISSF events in recent years.

Boost for Indian Shooters

Hosting the event at home is expected to provide a significant advantage to Indian shooters, who will compete in familiar conditions without the pressure of overseas travel. The championship will also give emerging talents a rare opportunity to secure Olympic qualification early against Asia’s top marksmen.

India has emerged as a shooting powerhouse in recent Olympic cycles, with consistent podium finishes at World Cups, Asian Games, and Commonwealth events. The 2027 Asian Championship is expected to further accelerate grassroots development and inspire the next generation of shooters.

Global Spotlight on Delhi

With elite shooters from across Asia set to compete, the championship will place Delhi firmly on the global shooting map, boosting sports tourism and reinforcing India’s credentials as a reliable host for high-stakes international competitions.

The event is also seen as a strategic step in India’s long-term ambition to strengthen its Olympic medal prospects and expand its influence in international sports governance.
