Collaborations in India and other countries outside the US will remain in place for at least the next few months.
New Delhi:Fact-checking organisations in India will continue their partnerships with Meta Platforms for the time being, a senior executive from the social media giant has confirmed. The clarification comes amid global discussions around Meta’s content moderation policies and its evolving approach to tackling misinformation.
According to the executive, while the company is reviewing certain aspects of its fact-checking programme in the United States, partnerships in countries such as India and several other international markets will remain operational for at least the next few months.
Programme to Continue Outside the US
Meta collaborates with independent third-party fact-checking organisations to review potentially misleading or false content circulating on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. These partners assess viral posts and label content that is found to be inaccurate, helping reduce its visibility and curb the spread of misinformation.
The executive clarified that there are currently no immediate plans to alter these arrangements in India. However, the company continues to evaluate its policies in response to regulatory requirements and public discourse in various markets.
Importance of Fact-Checking in India
India represents one of Meta’s largest user bases globally. With millions of users consuming and sharing content daily, fact-checking partnerships play a significant role in identifying misinformation, particularly around elections, public health, and sensitive social issues.
Independent fact-checkers in India have been working with Meta for several years under a structured programme aimed at strengthening information integrity on its platforms.
Ongoing Review
While the partnerships will continue for now, the executive indicated that the company remains engaged in internal reviews of its global content governance framework. Any future changes, if made, would be communicated in advance to stakeholders.
The development comes at a time when debates around online misinformation, free speech, and platform accountability continue to intensify worldwide.
