New Delhi: The Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo, Pieter Elbers, has resigned from his position, just months after the airline faced widespread criticism over mass flight cancellations and operational disruptions.

According to an official press statement released by the airline, IndiGo’s promoter and co-founder Rahul Bhatia will take over the management of the company on an interim basis until a new chief executive is appointed.

The resignation comes after the airline experienced a series of operational challenges in recent months, including large-scale flight cancellations that affected thousands of passengers across several cities. The disruptions had triggered complaints from travellers and increased scrutiny from aviation regulators.

IndiGo, operated by InterGlobe Aviation, is India’s largest airline by market share and operates an extensive domestic and international network. The airline has been facing pressure to improve operational efficiency and maintain passenger confidence following the recent cancellations.

In its statement, the airline acknowledged Elbers’ contributions during his tenure and thanked him for his leadership. However, it did not elaborate on the specific reasons behind his resignation.

Promoter Rahul Bhatia will now oversee the airline’s management and operations temporarily while the board begins the process of identifying a new CEO. Industry observers say the leadership transition comes at a crucial time for IndiGo as it works to stabilise operations and strengthen its services.

Aviation analysts believe that the interim leadership under Bhatia will focus on improving flight reliability, restoring passenger trust, and addressing operational issues that led to the earlier cancellations.

Further announcements regarding the appointment of a new CEO are expected in the coming weeks. ✈️
