Indore Water Contamination: Judicial Panel Extends Deadline for Evidence Submission to April 1

The judicial inquiry into the recent drinking water contamination incident in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, has been given additional time after the commission investigating the case extended the deadline for submitting evidence and statements until April 1.

Indore Water Contamination

The probe is being conducted by a single-member commission headed by Justice Sushil Kumar Gupta, a former judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The panel was set up by the Government of Madhya Pradesh to investigate the causes and consequences of the contamination incident that affected residents in parts of the city.

Investigation Into Bhagirathpura Contamination

The inquiry is focused on the Bhagirathpura area, where drinking water contamination reportedly caused serious health issues among local residents. Several people fell ill after consuming contaminated water, and the incident raised concerns over the safety of the city’s water supply system.

The commission has been tasked with examining multiple aspects of the incident, including the exact cause of contamination and the circumstances that led to the crisis.

Scope of the Inquiry

The panel led by Justice Sushil Kumar Gupta is investigating a wide range of issues connected to the incident. These include:

  • The source and cause of the drinking water contamination

  • The number of deaths and illnesses linked to the incident

  • The medical impact on affected residents

  • Possible administrative or operational lapses by authorities

  • Identification of individuals or agencies responsible

  • Recommendations for preventive and remedial measures

Officials said the extension of the deadline is intended to allow more individuals, organisations and affected residents to submit their testimonies and relevant documents.

Call for Public Cooperation

The commission has invited residents, civic officials, health experts and other stakeholders to provide information or evidence that may help determine the circumstances that led to the contamination. Authorities believe that additional submissions could help ensure a comprehensive investigation.

Local residents of Bhagirathpura and surrounding areas have been encouraged to present their accounts, including medical records or other proof of impact.

Government’s Response

The Government of Madhya Pradesh had constituted the inquiry after the incident triggered widespread concern and public demand for accountability. The state administration said the findings of the commission will help determine responsibility and guide steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Awaiting Findings

Once the evidence collection process is completed, the commission will analyse the submissions and prepare a report detailing its conclusions and recommendations.

The outcome of the inquiry is expected to play a crucial role in determining accountability for the water contamination crisis in Indore and improving the safety of urban drinking water systems in Madhya Pradesh.
