📰 Lakshadweep Allows Liquor in Government Guest Houses on Eight Islands to Boost Tourism

In a significant policy shift aimed at promoting tourism, the administration of Lakshadweep has decided to permit the serving of liquor in government-run guest houses across eight islands. The move is being positioned as part of a broader strategy to attract more domestic and international tourists to the picturesque archipelago, known for its pristine beaches and coral reefs.

Officials believe that relaxing liquor restrictions—long considered a barrier for some travelers—will make Lakshadweep a more competitive destination compared to other popular beach locations in India. The policy is expected to primarily target tourists staying in designated government accommodations, with strict regulations likely to be enforced to control access and consumption.

However, the decision has sparked strong political and social backlash. Hamdullah Sayeed, Member of Parliament from Lakshadweep, has openly criticised the move, raising concerns about its potential social impact. He warned that introducing alcohol in more islands could lead to increased addiction, disrupt local cultural values, and trigger long-term societal issues in the largely conservative island communities.

Echoing these concerns, local units of the Indian National Congress have launched protests across the islands. Party leaders have demanded the immediate withdrawal of the order, arguing that economic development should not come at the cost of public health and social stability. Demonstrations and public meetings have been organised to mobilise opposition and pressurise the administration.

Residents and community leaders are also divided over the issue. While some see the move as an opportunity for economic growth and employment through tourism, others fear it may erode traditional values and increase law-and-order challenges.

The administration has yet to issue a detailed response to the criticism but is expected to clarify guidelines and safeguards in the coming days. As the debate intensifies, the decision is likely to remain a contentious topic in Lakshadweep’s socio-political landscape.
