Law Student Shoots Classmate Inside Punjab College, Then Himself; Police Probe Motive

In a shocking incident, a first-year law student of a private college in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district allegedly shot and killed a female classmate during class before turning the gun on himself on Monday (February 9, 2026), police said.

The incident has raised serious concerns over campus security and access to firearms within educational institutions.

Police Probe Motive

Incident Inside Classroom

According to preliminary information, the accused student opened fire on his female classmate while a lecture was underway. The sudden gunshots caused panic among students and faculty members, who rushed out of the classroom.

The victim sustained critical injuries and was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead. Shortly after shooting her, the accused allegedly shot himself inside the classroom.

He was also rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries, police confirmed.

Police Investigation Underway

Senior police officials reached the college soon after the incident and cordoned off the campus. Forensic teams collected evidence from the scene, including the firearm used in the crime.

Police said they will examine all possible motives behind the incident, including the nature of the relationship between the two students. Investigators are looking into whether there was any prior dispute or personal angle involved.

“We are probing all aspects, including a possible friendship angle. Statements of classmates, faculty members, and family members will be recorded,” a police official said.

Questions Over Campus Security

The victim’s mother has flagged alleged lapses in campus security, questioning how a student was able to bring a firearm into the classroom without detection. She has demanded a thorough inquiry into the institution’s safety protocols.

College authorities expressed shock over the incident and said they are cooperating fully with the investigation. Classes were suspended for the day, and counselling support is expected to be provided to students.

Community in Shock

The tragic episode has sent shockwaves across Tarn Taran district and beyond. Students and parents have called for stricter security measures in colleges, including bag checks and surveillance systems.

Police have urged the public not to speculate about the motive until the investigation is complete. Further details are awaited as officials continue to examine evidence and gather testimonies.

The incident marks one of the rare but deeply disturbing cases of campus violence in the region, prompting renewed debate over student safety and mental health support systems in educational institutions.
