Ahmedabad: Authorities in Gujarat have seized illegal liquor worth approximately ₹42 crore over the past two years as part of intensified enforcement against bootlegging and the illegal liquor trade in the state.

Officials said the seizures were carried out during multiple raids and operations conducted by law enforcement agencies across various districts. Since Gujarat follows a strict prohibition policy, the sale, consumption, and transportation of liquor are regulated under the Gujarat Prohibition Act, 1949.

Police and excise department teams launched several crackdowns on smuggling networks that attempted to bring alcohol into the state from neighbouring regions where liquor is legally sold. Authorities said that bootleggers often use highways and rural routes to transport liquor illegally.

During these operations, officials confiscated thousands of bottles of alcohol, vehicles used for transportation, and other materials linked to the illegal trade. Several individuals involved in the smuggling and distribution network were also arrested.

A senior official said that enforcement agencies have been continuously monitoring suspicious activities and increasing surveillance to curb illegal liquor circulation. “Strict action is being taken against those involved in bootlegging and illegal supply of alcohol,” the official stated.

The government of Gujarat maintains one of the strictest prohibition policies in India, aimed at controlling alcohol consumption and preventing related social issues. However, the state periodically witnesses attempts by smuggling groups to bring liquor from neighbouring states.

Authorities said the crackdown will continue, with special teams focusing on border areas and transport routes to prevent the illegal movement of alcohol into the state.
