Lost, Found, Lost Again: Jharkhand Man Refuses to Take Back Elderly Woman Reunited After Two Decades

Kolkata: In a heartbreaking turn of events, an elderly woman who was reunited with her family after being missing for more than two decades now faces an uncertain future after her son allegedly refused to take her back.

Jharkhand Man

Missing for Over 20 Years

The woman, originally from Jharkhand, had reportedly gone missing over 20 years ago under circumstances that remain unclear. She was later found wandering in West Bengal and had been living in shelter homes for years, unable to provide clear details about her identity due to age-related memory issues.

Social workers and authorities eventually pieced together fragments of information about her background. Through coordinated efforts between NGOs and police, her identity was traced to a family in Jharkhand.

Emotional Reunion Turns Sour

When officials contacted her family, initial reports suggested relief and surprise. However, the situation took a distressing turn when her son reportedly declined to take responsibility for her care.

Sources said the son cited financial constraints and family circumstances as reasons for his refusal. Officials attempted counselling and mediation, but the family remained unwilling to bring her home.

Authorities Step In

Following the refusal, local authorities in Kolkata have stepped in to ensure the woman’s continued care. She is currently under the supervision of a state-run facility where she is being provided food, shelter, and medical attention.

Officials are exploring legal options under senior citizen welfare laws to determine whether the family can be compelled to provide support.

A Larger Social Question

The case has sparked debate about the responsibilities of families toward elderly members, especially those who have been missing or displaced for long periods. Activists say the incident highlights the vulnerability of senior citizens and the need for stronger social safety nets.

For the elderly woman, what seemed like a long-awaited reunion has once again turned into uncertainty — lost once, found, and now emotionally lost again.
