Maharashtra Becomes First State to Launch Government-Run Menopause Clinics for Women

New Healthcare Initiative Aims to Address Hormonal, Mental, and Bone Health Issues

Mumbai, Maharashtra:Maharashtra has become the first state in India to introduce dedicated government-run Menopause Clinics across public hospitals and urban healthcare centres. The initiative is aimed at providing specialised medical support to women experiencing menopause-related health challenges.

The programme has been launched under the leadership of Minister of State for Public Health Meghna Bordikar, who said that the response from women across the state has been extremely positive since its rollout.

Government-Run Menopause Clinics

Comprehensive Care for Menopause-Related Health Problems

The newly established clinics are designed to provide holistic healthcare services to women undergoing menopause, a natural biological process that often brings physical and psychological changes.

The clinics will focus on treating and managing:

  • Hormonal imbalance

  • Bone disorders and osteoporosis

  • Sleep disturbances and fatigue

  • Cardiovascular health risks

  • Mental health concerns such as anxiety and depression

Doctors and trained healthcare professionals will offer consultations, counselling, medical tests, and lifestyle guidance to improve women’s quality of life during this transition phase.

Government’s Push for Women-Centric Healthcare

According to Health Department officials, menopause is often neglected in India due to lack of awareness and social stigma. Many women do not seek medical help, assuming symptoms are a normal part of ageing.

Minister Meghna Bordikar stated that the government aims to break the taboo around menopause and ensure women receive timely medical care. “This initiative is about empowering women with knowledge, treatment, and support during a critical phase of life,” she said.

Positive Response from Women Across the State

The state government reported that the response to the menopause clinics has been overwhelming, with a growing number of women visiting government hospitals for consultation and treatment. Awareness campaigns are also being planned in both urban and rural areas to educate women about menopause-related health risks.

Future Expansion Plans

Officials said the programme will be expanded to district hospitals, primary health centres, and community clinics across Maharashtra. Training modules for doctors, nurses, and health workers are also being developed to ensure consistent and quality care.

Health experts believe the initiative could serve as a model for other Indian states, encouraging nationwide adoption of menopause-specific healthcare services.
