Maharashtra Forms Task Force to Tackle Climate Change and Prevent Farmers’ Suicides

The Government of Maharashtra has constituted a special task force to study the impact of climate change on agriculture and suggest measures to prevent farmer suicides across the state.

Tackle Climate

The newly formed panel, comprising 10 members—including eight senior government officials and two subject experts—held its first meeting on Monday to discuss strategies for addressing the growing challenges faced by farmers due to erratic weather patterns and climate-related disruptions.

Focus on Climate Impact on Agriculture

Officials said the task force has been created to examine how climate change is affecting crop yields, water availability, and farming practices in Maharashtra. Increasing instances of droughts, unseasonal rains, and extreme temperatures have been severely impacting agricultural productivity and farmer incomes in many parts of the state.

The panel will study these issues in detail and recommend policies to strengthen climate resilience in the agricultural sector.

Aim to Reduce Farmers’ Distress

One of the key objectives of the task force is to identify ways to reduce economic distress among farmers, which has often been linked to the problem of farmer suicides. The panel is expected to explore measures such as improved crop insurance schemes, better irrigation infrastructure, and support for climate-resilient farming techniques.

Officials said the recommendations will focus on both short-term relief and long-term strategies to improve farmers’ livelihoods.

Experts and Officials in Panel

The task force includes senior representatives from departments related to agriculture, water resources, rural development, and environment, along with two independent experts with experience in climate science and agricultural policy.

The inclusion of experts is aimed at ensuring that the panel’s recommendations are based on scientific research and practical solutions.

Policy Recommendations Expected

The panel will conduct consultations with farmers, agricultural organisations, and researchers to gather inputs before preparing its report. The government expects the task force to propose actionable measures that can be implemented at the state level.

Long-Term Agricultural Sustainability

Officials believe that addressing the challenges posed by climate change is crucial for ensuring long-term sustainability of agriculture in Maharashtra. By combining climate adaptation strategies with farmer welfare policies, the government aims to reduce vulnerabilities and improve rural livelihoods.

The task force will continue its consultations and is expected to submit recommendations to the state government after completing its assessment.
