Maharashtra Government Signs MoU with Finnish Firms for Development of Sassoon Dock

The Government of Maharashtra has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with several companies from Finland to modernise and develop Sassoon Dock, one of the oldest and busiest fishing docks in Mumbai.

MoU

The agreement aims to upgrade the dock’s infrastructure, improve fish handling and storage facilities, and introduce advanced technology to strengthen the fisheries sector in the state.

Modernisation of a Historic Dock

Speaking about the project, Maharashtra Fisheries Minister Nitesh Rane said Sassoon Dock plays a crucial role in the state’s fishing economy. The dock records an average annual fish production of around 50,000 to 60,000 metric tonnes, making it a key hub for the fisheries industry.

He said the government is prioritising the redevelopment of the facility to ensure better infrastructure, hygiene standards, and improved working conditions for fishermen and traders.

Collaboration with Finnish Companies

Under the MoU, Finnish firms are expected to provide expertise in modern fish processing systems, cold storage technology, and sustainable harbour management. The collaboration will also focus on improving logistics, waste management, and digital monitoring systems at the dock.

Officials said the partnership will help bring global best practices to the management and operation of the dock.

Boost to Fisheries Sector

The redevelopment project is expected to significantly benefit fishermen, traders, and exporters who rely on Sassoon Dock for their livelihood. Upgraded facilities could improve the quality of fish storage and transportation, thereby increasing export potential.

Authorities believe the initiative will also help strengthen the state’s marine economy while ensuring sustainable fishing practices.

Part of Wider Development Plans

The Maharashtra government has been working on multiple initiatives to modernise fishing infrastructure across coastal areas. Officials said the Sassoon Dock project will serve as a model for upgrading other fishing harbours in the state.

Once completed, the modernisation is expected to enhance productivity, improve hygiene and safety standards, and support the long-term growth of the fisheries sector in Maharashtra.
