Maharashtra Health Department Rolls Out HPV Vaccine for Girls on Women’s Day

In a major step toward strengthening women’s health, the Maharashtra Health Department has launched a statewide HPV vaccination drive for girls aged 9 to 14 years. The programme was officially rolled out on International Women's Day and aims to protect nearly 9.84 lakh girls from the risk of cervical cancer.

HPV Vaccine

Protecting Girls From Cervical Cancer

The vaccination campaign targets girls in the 9–14 age group, a critical period when the vaccine is most effective in preventing infection caused by the Human papillomavirus. Persistent infection with HPV is the primary cause of Cervical Cancer, one of the most common cancers among women in India.

Health officials said the initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to reduce cervical cancer cases and promote preventive healthcare for young girls.

Large-Scale Vaccination Campaign

The programme will be implemented across government schools, public health centres, and selected private institutions throughout Maharashtra. Health workers and school authorities have been mobilised to identify eligible girls and ensure that the vaccine reaches them efficiently.

Authorities estimate that around 9.84 lakh girls across the state will benefit from the initiative in its initial phase.

Awareness and Preventive Healthcare

Officials also emphasised the importance of spreading awareness among parents and communities about the benefits of the HPV vaccine. Medical experts say the vaccine is a safe and effective way to prevent cervical cancer when administered at the recommended age.

Health workers will conduct awareness sessions in schools and communities to encourage participation in the vaccination programme.

Step Toward Women’s Health Empowerment

Launching the programme on International Women’s Day highlights the state government’s focus on women’s health and early prevention of serious diseases.

Public health experts have welcomed the move, stating that large-scale HPV vaccination can significantly reduce cervical cancer cases in the future, improving long-term health outcomes for women across Maharashtra.
